Job Description

Plans, prioritizes, coordinates and executes the research, writing and editing of internal and external communications assignments in all media; supports the communications needs of the corporation with priority to the President and CEO as well as the rest of the executive team in assisting, leading and influencing the development of effective internal and external messages.  Creates and writes high impacting and sensitive communications such as speeches, talking points, scripts, articles, opinion pieces, government committee submissions, press releases as well as high stakes auditable documents and other multi-faceted campaigns in a deadline driven and high pressured environment. Ensures client (and corporate) objectives are met and overall quality standards and corporate policies are maintained by researching subject areas to obtain information and verify facts, and proofreading and editing material to give maximum clarity of meaning, accuracy, relevance, and consistency of style and format, while ensuring effectiveness of content to support underlying communications strategies.  Supports a conceptual and consistent methodology set by the Director that is client and stakeholder focused.

Job Responsibilities

Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Senior Writer/Editor.

  • Provides meaningful and effective client and stakeholder-focused advice, guidance and writing and editing services to internal clients at all management levels that support successful delivery of key communications messages in all media. Participates in, advises, influences and leads senior executive decisions on internal and external messages.
  • Leads the planning and development of strategic communications with the objective of assisting clients to think, plan and critically assess key messages and message ideas while limiting the reputational exposure of the company.
  • Ensures client (and corporate) objectives are met and overall quality standards and corporate policies are maintained by researching subject areas to obtain information and verify facts, and proofreading and editing material to give maximum clarity of meaning, accuracy, relevance, and consistency of style and format, while ensuring effectiveness of content to support underlying communications strategies.
  • Creates and writes communications strategies and communications in all media that are of a high-profile and sensitive nature, such as speeches and talking points for the President and the executive management team, government committee submissions, as well as high-profile and high-stake documents such as the Annual Report. Required to write communications on behalf of Directors, General Managers or the VP of Communications, as required.
  • Supports and implements the development of multi-channel communications solutions targeted to different audience segments, delivery channels and needs including non-traditional media such as social networking websites and closed circuit video display network in company facilities.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with the Writing Services team and Communications group as a whole under the direction of the General Manager and VP, Communications to ensure the effective and efficient implementation of communications initiatives; supports the pursuit of goals and ensures all communications channels form an integral part of a strategic communications planning framework.
  • Builds and maintains a comprehensive and leading-edge knowledge of Canada Post’s operations, business and strategic and competitive standing to ensure understanding and accurate interpretation of the issues, trends and corporate strategies when creating and writing communications strategies and communications in all media.
  • Supports a positive work environment and culture within the function, the objectives and performance expectations of the Writing Services group and the successful delivery of strategies overseen by Client Services. Shares best practices and the identification of opportunities that improve overall communications services.

Qualifications

Education

  • Post-secondary diploma in a relevant discipline such as Journalism, Communications or the Arts, or a minimum of three years of relevant work experience
Experience
  • Successful, proven experience as a writer and editor across various channels, including digital and social media
  • Experience preferred: writing speeches, annual reports, op-ed pieces, news releases, statements or submissions to government and/or creative briefs as demonstrated in a portfolio
  • Experience reviewing corporate materials and reports
  • Experience writing about business strategies or corporate or public finance would be a definite asset
Other Candidate Requirements

Other Information
