Job Description
The Director, Artificial Intelligence is a senior leadership role within the Office of the CIO, responsible for executing the enterprise AI strategy. This role oversees AI governance, the "AI Centre of Excellence" (CoE), AI platforms, and IT operations, ensuring secure, ethical, and scalable AI adoption. The Director partners closely with technology, data, cybersecurity, business units, and executive leadership to maximize value from AI-enabled transformation while ensuring data privacy, ethical compliance, and high ROI.
Job Responsibilities
Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Director, Artificial Intelligence (AI):
- Defines and leads the enterprise-wide AI strategy in alignment with the CIO’s technology roadmap and corporate objectives. Champions responsible and ethical AI practices and embeds them into all AI initiatives.
- Leads the development of AI policies, standards, and best practices. Supports and evolves the AI governance frameworks covering safety, privacy, compliance, model risk management, and regulatory alignment. Partners with cybersecurity to manage AI-specific risks including data leakage, model vulnerabilities, and misuse.
- Oversees the continued evolution and alignment of the current AI platforms and technologies at Canada Post, ensuring seamless integration with cloud ecosystems (Azure, AWS, GCP or others).
- Oversees the design, deployment, and lifecycle management of enterprise AI platforms, including generative AI and automation technologies. Evaluates emerging AI technologies, vendors, and platform capabilities, leading enterprise adoption.
- Supports and leads an AI Centre of Excellence (CoE) including data scientists, ML engineers, prompt engineers, and AI product managers. Oversees AI project portfolio execution, ensuring value delivery, scalability, and business impact.

- Develops and manages the AI operating budget and investment roadmap. Leads vendor strategy, negotiation, and long-term partnership management with AI and cloud technology providers.
- Collaborates with Innovation to identify opportunities for AI-driven innovation, automation, and efficiency across business functions.
- Collaborates with Data & Analytics leadership to ensure high-quality data pipelines, MLOps frameworks, and model lifecycle governance.
- Acts as a strategic advisor to senior executives and business leaders on AI opportunities and implications. Drives enterprise adoption of AI capabilities through training programs, enablement, and change management. Leads the cultural shift toward "AI-first" thinking.
- Implements KPIs, ROI metrics, and performance dashboards for AI initiatives. Ensures AI solutions deliver measurable business outcomes and improve customer and employee experiences.
Qualifications
Education
- Completed post-secondary education, preferably in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or another related field OR a combination of equivalent professional experience and training.
- A master’s degree is considered an asset.
Experience
- 10 or more years of combined experience in data, analytics, AI/ML, and enterprise software engineering leadership.
- 3 or more years of experience managing large, cross-functional teams and complex technology portfolios across software engineering, product management, and data disciplines.
- Experience in complex AI context aggregation techniques including memory optimization and token management (caching, context bloat, etc.).
- Experience integrating OAuth authorization constructs into real-time data governance execution, handling claims, roles, RBAC and Identity Governance and Administration.
- Proven experience layering generative capabilities on top of ML models.
- Experience providing clear and transparent audit accounting of LLM and prompt usage, applying guardrails and implementing cybersecurity safeguards to generative interactions.
- Experience managing and planning budgets.
Other Candidate Requirements
- Strong background in software engineering automation, product management, and platform engineering.
- Applied knowledge of Machine Learning and Generative AI constructs.
- Strong academic knowledge of effective context engineering practices and vector embedding techniques to optimize proximity and relevance.
- Ability to participate in pull request reviews of core framework logic, chatbot and vendor integrations (Java, Spring AI, LangChain, A2A, gRPC, Angular, OAuth, Python, Terraform, AWS Bedrock (and landing zone), Kubernetes, multi-model and multi-modal, agentic patterns such as Chain of Thought, LLM as Judge, etc.).
- Strong background in data management practices, Postgres PGVector, Neptune and Neo4J graph databases, information architecture practices and data catalog integration techniques for DataOps and MLOps pipeline integrations.
- Exceptional ability to communicate complex AI concepts to executive stakeholders, translating technical depth into clear business outcomes.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with executive presence.
